Key takeaways

  • WhatsApp Business API costs = Meta messaging charges + platform subscription.
  • Meta prices template messages by category (marketing, utility, authentication) and by the recipient's country.
  • Approximate India rates listed by Chatbox AI: marketing ₹0.58, utility ₹0.14, authentication ₹0.12; service replies are free.
  • Meta revises its rate card periodically, so treat any published rate as approximate.
  • Chatbox AI plans cost ₹999/month (Starter), ₹2,999/month (Growth) or custom (Scale), with a 7-day free trial.

WhatsApp pricing confuses a lot of people, mostly because there are two bills and Meta has changed its model over the years. This guide explains how it works today, what the categories mean and how to estimate and reduce your spend.

What do you actually pay for on the WhatsApp Business API?

Your total cost has two parts:

  1. Meta's messaging charges: paid for the template messages you send, based on the message category and the recipient's country code.
  2. Your platform subscription: what you pay a provider like Chatbox AI for the inbox, chatbot, broadcasts, automation and analytics.

These are independent. A cheaper platform does not lower Meta's rates, and Meta's charges are the same whichever Business Solution Provider you use.

How does Meta price WhatsApp messages?

Meta's pricing depends on the category of the message.

CategoryWhat it is used forApproximate India rate
MarketingOffers, promotions, re-engagement, cart reminders with incentives₹0.58 per message
UtilityOrder, delivery, payment and account updates₹0.14 per message
AuthenticationOTPs and login verification₹0.12 per message
ServiceYour replies when the customer starts the chatFree

These are the approximate India rates published on Chatbox AI's pricing page. Meta changes its rate card periodically and rates differ by country, so always check the latest figures before budgeting. Taxes such as GST may apply on top.

What happened to conversation-based pricing?

For several years Meta billed per conversation: a 24-hour session opened by the first billable message, with unlimited messages inside it at no extra charge. You will still see the phrase "conversation pricing" everywhere, including in the name of this page.

Meta has since moved to per-message pricing for templates: each delivered marketing, utility or authentication template is charged individually. Service replies stay free, and utility templates sent while a customer service window is open are generally free as well. The categories and the 24-hour customer service window still matter, they now decide which messages are charged rather than when a conversation starts.

What are free entry points?

When a customer reaches you through a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page call-to-action button and you reply within 24 hours, Meta opens a free entry point window of 72 hours. During that window, messages, including templates, are not charged. This makes Click-to-WhatsApp ads especially cost-efficient for lead generation.

How much does a typical campaign cost?

Here are illustrative examples using the approximate India rates above (before taxes):

ScenarioMessagesApproximate Meta cost
Festive offer broadcast10,000 marketing₹5,800
Order and shipping updates20,000 utility₹2,800
Login OTPs50,000 authentication₹6,000
Answering customer questions5,000 service replies₹0

Add your platform plan: Chatbox AI's Starter plan is ₹999/month (1,000 conversations, 2 agent seats), Growth is ₹2,999/month (10,000 conversations, 10 seats) and Scale is custom. Yearly billing saves 20%.

How can you lower your WhatsApp costs?

  • Categorise correctly. Keep transactional updates free of promotional content so they stay in the cheaper utility category.
  • Segment before you broadcast. Sending to engaged, relevant customers means fewer wasted marketing messages and better quality ratings. Chatbox AI's contact management lets you filter by tags and attributes.
  • Encourage customers to message you. Service replies are free, so "Chat with us" buttons, QR codes and keyword triggers shift volume into free conversations.
  • Use Click-to-WhatsApp ads to unlock the 72-hour free window.
  • Let a chatbot handle FAQs. A no-code chatbot answers inside the service window without extra Meta cost.
  • Track ROI. Use reports and insights to see which campaigns earn more than they cost.

Is WhatsApp cheaper than SMS or email?

It depends on what you measure. Per message, email is usually cheaper and SMS rates vary by route. But WhatsApp messages are opened far more often, Chatbox AI cites a 98% open rate for WhatsApp compared with around 20% for email, and they support images, buttons and two-way replies. For most businesses the relevant number is cost per order or per resolved query, not cost per message.

Which plan fits your volume?
